古来より、日本では初夢に見ると縁起が良いとされている「一富士二鷹三茄子」。特に鷹に関しては、立身出世や幸運を象徴する存在と言われていた。異国の地、ハワイで過酷な状況下にありながらも、新たな道を切り開いた日系移民たちは、母国日本の縁起物を心の拠り所とし、好んで身につけた。荒れ狂う波間を飛来する鷹をダイナミックな構図で描き出し、鮮やかな色使いによって躍動感を表現したこの作品は、著名なデザインがいくつも存在する鷹柄の中でも、異彩を放つ一枚。オエリジナルを手がけたのは、ムサシヤ・ショウテン・リミテッド。同社は日系移民、宮本孝一郎が立ち上げた「むさしや」を1934年に藤井順一商店が譲り受け展開していた。また、翌年には「アロハシャツ」の名称を使い、ホノルル・アドバタイザー紙への広告を掲載するなど、様々な人たちから注目を集めるアイテムとなるきっかけを作ったブランドの一つ。
